What to Expect After Tubal Reversal – Irregular Bleeding, Late Period or Pain?

You have decided that perhaps a tubal reversal is the thing for you. You have checked out many different concerns and are now thinking about what to expect after tubal reversal surgery. Maybe one of those questions has to do with your menstruation after tubal reversal.

Is there going to be anything different with your period after tubal reversal? Will you have a late period after tubal reversal surgery? Will you have irregular bleeding after your tubal reversal.

Your Period after Tubal Reversal

cycles after tubal reversalThe answer, as with so many things, is it all depends. Your first menstrual cycles after tubal reversal could come early or, more likely, they could come late. You may find that it is even several days late for the first one or even for the first several cycles after tubal reversal surgery. Every woman is going to be different.

One thing you should remember is that you just had surgery. In this surgery your fallopian tubes had scarred areas removed and then they were sewn back together again. Your body not only has to recover from that operation, something which can take one to two months (usually less than the upper range), but your hormones and everything associated with them have to get back in sync and working again. This is one reason some women report some mood swings in the first few weeks after their tubal ligation reversal.

Will Your Menstruation after Tubal Reversal Be Heavy? Will Your Period Be Painful?

According to some doctors, it is normal for your first menstruation after tubal reversal to be heavy and painful. You should probably be ready for the pain after tubal reversal which could be more than you normally suffer.

You could find your normal pain reliever will not work, although your doctor will probably give you some T3 for the pain after surgery. Be aware that the acetaminophen does damage to your liver. Just try different over the counter pain killer brands until you find the one that works best for you if you suffer during your later periods.

What Others Have Said About Period after Tubal Reversal

There is just one more thing concerning your period after tubal reversal which you just might need to be concerned with. This is just based on anecdotal evidence, but you could find you feel like fainting even if you are not usually a fainter. Be aware of this possibility.

The Good News for Women Suffering Tubal Ligation Side Effects

The other side of concerns over what to expect after tubal reversal with pain and irregular bleeding is that things might get better. Some women who have suffered from Post Tubal Ligation Syndrome, the possible side effects of tubal ligation, find that their periods are actually easier and less painful. They quickly begin to feel like their old selves from before having their tubes tied.

Instead of the very long periods, theirs are now shorter. Instead of incredible pain, they have something that can be taken care of with an over the counter pain medication. Instead of having to isolate themselves to their beds, they can go about their daily lives.

The Bottom Line About Your Period after Tubal Reversal

So it really comes down to yes, it’s possible there will be irregular bleeding after tubal reversal and some pain too, but it’s just going to vary from woman to woman.

Although your doctor will tell you to wait at least after one cycle (some suggest two or three – be sure what your individual situation is) to try to conceive, it is not unheard of for a woman to become pregnant within one month after a tubal reversal. It is highly recommended that you allow your body to heal. Don’t stress it with a pregnancy when it’s still trying to recover from the surgery.

If these irregular symptoms don’t go away within a few cycles, it could be that there is something else that is the matter. Go and check this out with your doctor.

At any rate, this pain and the heavy bleeding after tubal reversal is a part of the price you may have to pay to be able to have a child again. Just try to keep thinking of that little gift you will receive in the end for putting up with a few cycles of funky menstruation after tubal reversal.

You’ve done your research into reversing your tubal ligation and have decided to go for it. Now you will need to know the tubal reversal cost.  Just what is the cost of tubal reversal and what goes into making up the price?

Will Health Insurance Cover My Tubal Reversal Cost?

tubal reversal costUp front you should understand that while your insurance may have covered most of the costs of your original surgery to “tie your tubes”, very few will cover any of the costs of reversing your tubal ligation.

However, in order to find out if they will cover the surgery or any of the associated costs, you should get the proper insurance codes and procedure codes from the doctor you have selected (actually from his staff) and ask your insurance company if they will cover any of the costs of the tubal reversal.

If they tell you they will not, be sure to check if, and what, they will cover if there are any complications from proceeding with the microsurgery.  No, complications aren’t expected but this is surgery after all.

If your insurance company will not cover the total cost of the surgery see if they will cover any of the tubal reversal fees.  If you are in luck, this can help reduce the cost you may have to bear.

NOTE: The one thing most visitors to this site seem to be interested in is some way to finance a tubal ligation reversal or a vasectomy reversal. As you can read in this article and elsewhere, one way to do this is by having an insurance provider provide you with appropriate health insurance.

You will find that your eligibility for coverage and the available policy types will vary depending upon the information you provide and possibly even where you live. You will need to have any questions answered directly by the health insurance carrier you choose. Using eHealthInsurance will allow you to request information on various insurance plans and carriers. You can even apply for health insurance plans on the site. Any questions you have should be discussed with the carrier during the approval process.

The variety of insurance carriers and policies available on eHealthInsurance should provide excellent potential to fulfill your search for the proper health insurance carrier. (End Note)

What Is The Tubal Reversal Cost on Average?

Since your insurance most likely won’t cover the cost of the tubal reversal, you will have to handle it out of pocket. Tubal reversal cost can be any where from $5500 on up. The average is either $8,000 to $9,000 or a bit more depending upon where you get your figures. This should tell you there is a wide range of costs.

Lower Cost of Tubal Reversal with Clinic

It appears that costs are lower where you have a doctor(s) that has his own clinic in which this is mostly what he does – the tubal reversal surgery. This stands to reason if they have their own facilities, staff and do several procedures every day.

Such practitioners will not be paying hospital fees and other fees such organizations may require. I found one facility where the price was $5500 and a few others where it was $5900 – $6900 depending on how fast you paid the fee up front.

Most clinics will refund a portion of an advance payment if the surgery is canceled more than two or three weeks ahead of the scheduled date. However, most will not refund any of the fee if cancellation happens in under two weeks. A supposition is it becomes harder to fill that vacant spot the closer it is to the scheduled date.

Be Sure to Know What Is Included in Your Tubal Reversal Cost

When you begin comparing doctors to perform you tubal reversal surgery, know exactly what is included with the fee you pay. Such things could be the pre-operative review of your records, the surgical fee for the doctor, lab work, the surgical supplies, anesthesiologist’s fees, facility fees, nurses’ fees, pre-operative visit fee, pain management costs, and any follow up care. Ask what extras will be needed that are not included in this fee.

When adding up all the pieces of your tubal reversal cost, don’t forget to include your cost of getting to the clinic (airplane tickets or cost of driving), hotel costs while there and cost of food as well. You will probably need to count on a minimum of two nights in a hotel with a more likely scenario being three night stay.

Further Note: I wrote several insurance companies for information of whether they supplied insurance for reversals. eHealthInsurance was the only one who answered my request for information by informing me that you will just have to talk to them and it will be on a case by case basis. Be aware that is you do fill out the information on that page linked above, I will receive a fee.

Looking into Pregnancy after Tubal Reversal

Pregnancy after tubal reversal questions and concerns come up after a woman has had her reversal surgery although some do seek out advice before.  Although there is more than one reason for undergoing tubal reversal surgery, most women do so in order to be able to have another child.  This article starts with the assumption that is the reason you had or will have your surgery.

positive test for pregnancy after tubal reversalHaving a child is the whole reason you are considering undergoing tubal reversal surgery or have already done so. Now you are looking to find out what factors affects pregnancy after tubal reversal. Below we will cover some different things which can affect how soon and what your probability of a successful pregnancy is given certain factors.

Age Affects Pregnancy After Tubal Reversal

As a woman grows older the chances of her conceiving become greatly reduced even if she hasn’t had tubal ligation. However for those women that have had tubal ligation and then choose to have the operation reversed, they may find it a bit more difficult to conceive no matter their age. However, the chances of a woman conceiving after tubal reversal are greatly increased by being younger rather than older just as it would if you had never had either surgery.

For women who are under the age of 30 the chances of them getting pregnant after tubal reversal is around 77%.  But the older the woman is the chances of them conceiving are greatly reduced. For those women aged between 35 and 39 the chances of them getting pregnant drops to 62% and for women over the age of 40 their success rate is only 34%.

What Type of Tubal Ligation Did You Have – This Affects Pregnancy after Tubal Reversal

Now the next thing that affects your getting pregnant after tubal reversal is what happened in your original tubal ligation surgery. Did that surgeon take too much of the fallopian tubes when he did his cutting and what condition were the tubes left in? Did the type of sterilization procedure he conducted damage a lot of your fallopian tubes?  Will the type of procedure you had require a different type of tubal reversal surgery?

The longer the tubes are and the better condition they are in when you undergo your reversal surgery the better your chances of getting pregnant. Even at that, some women just take more time. One woman can get pregnant almost seemingly immediately while another can take five years plus.

So it’s good to know how long your tubes are and what shape they are in.  Remember your tubal reversal doctor will need to also remove the bad parts of your fallopian tubes.

Time Affects Conceiving after Tubal Reversal

Again time has a part to play in this next factor and that has to do with how much time has passed since the original tubal ligation procedure. A woman who is having a tubal reversal done only five years since her original surgery to have her tubes tied will be better off than someone who has waited fifteen years or better.

The longer it has been, the longer the time for some damage to occur to the tubes which means the greater the chances of things not being successful. However, we are not saying you can’t conceive after a tubal ligation reversal, only that you shouldn’t waste time if that is what you want and to be aware that it is a factor.

This time factor also goes back to the fact that the longer you wait, the older you will be.  Thus, your chances of conceiving and carrying to term will be lower.

Will Another Alternative Be Better for Getting Pregnant Instead of Tubal Reversal?

One thing your fertility specialist may ask you to consider is IVF, in vitro fertilization. Is that going to be better for you than a tubal reversal? Several studies have shown that woman undergoing the surgery are more successful in conception than women who choose IVF.

One such study from the Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center, where they keep excellent track of their patients, it was discovered that the women who had the tubal reversal done, instead of the IVF treatments, conceived more easily.

In addition, the number of actual babies born after they became pregnant, was higher for the tubal reversal surgery than for those who underwent IVF. This information is borne out with statistics from a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study conducted every couple years with data collected from various fertility clinics that do IVF.

Even better for you is that the reversal surgery is done generally on an outpatient basis with only about an hour in surgery thus lowering the cost of this treatment.  This compares to the IVF treatments which can take many tries with a cost for each effort.  Most women do not get pregnant with their first cycle of IVF.

Think about what we have written about in this article. Any of these things, maybe even all of them, can and will have an affect on the outcome of such a surgery. Conception will take time but the more the factors are to your benefit, perhaps the less time it will take for pregnancy after tubal reversal surgery and the sooner you will hold that darling infant in your arms.
